Events were by then slowly taking a turn for the worse. In Compartment Six, work began on rigging a new cooling system under direction of the officer in charge, Senior Lieutenant Krasichkov. The crew cut the line leading from the reactor air vent and extended the new pipeline to where it would be joined to the air vent. An attempt was made to strip out coolant from the reactor compartment upper-level sump using the special 2P-2 pump, but the pump was air bound and could not gain suction because the heat had boiled the coolant to steam in the sump.

We had to try to drain the forward reactor upper level chamber sump. The main stripping pump for Compartment Eight failed; it was out of order. We decided to drain the sump with the main drainage pump for the central post. As soon as we sterted pumping, the radiation count rose in Compartments Five, Four, and Three. Evidently, particulate fission products were being flushed out with the sump water and channeled through these other compartments by the main drainage pump.
