PARIS, Feb 8, 2010 (AFP) - The Russian navy wants to buy four modern amphibious assault ships from France rather than just the one already under discussion, the French defence ministry said Monday.
News that Moscow is in the market for a Mistral-class warship, and is for the first time prepared to buy one from a NATO member, has worried Russia's neighbours Georgia and France's western allies.
"It's no longer one command ship, but four," Jacques de Lajugie, head of international sales at the French defence ministry's arms production department, told reporters in Paris.
Lajugie said that France had already agreed in principle to sell Russia one of the warships, which can carry armoured vehicles and helicopters for amphibious landings, and was considering the new request".
