This low frequency passive and active search and attack sonar is supplied by IBM. The original AN/ BQQ-5 was designed with only one operating console and the idea that the various modes could be brought up sequentially as required. Despite the fact that no one had actually been able to operate the system that way under simulated conditions, installations proceeded. When it became mandatory to redesign the system with three consoles, it caused costly space management problems, manning issues, and berthing shortages.
