In a British exercise, Rum Tub, Nautilus showed that she could "do as she like[d]" in the face of modern ASW forces. While keeping station under a convoy, she detected and attacked the submarine Quillback, which was at¬tempting to attack the ship above her. Thus, Nautilus dem¬onstrated her potential as an underwater escort. Passing at 22 kt, she detected the British diesel submarine Auriga with her SQS-4 active sonar at just under 3,000 yd and made a simulated attack. During a later exercise, a screen¬ing helicopter jumped to a position within 50 yd of a green grenade fired by Nautilus, but she was already 3,500 yd away, clear of any weapon the helicopter might have dropped.
By the fall of 1957, Nautilus had been exposed to 5,000 dummy attacks in U.S. exercises. A conservative estimate would have had a conventional submarine killed 300 times; Nautilus was ruled as killed only 3 times.2
Using their active sonars, nuclear submarines could hold contact on diesel craft without risking counterattack.3 The U.S. Navy abandoned construction of diesel subma¬rines and accepted the higher cost of an all-nuclear fleet. Given Wilkinson's perception, the standard for submarine speed was substantially raised beyond that envisaged in 1950. The result was Skipjack.

В ходе учения по ПЛО конвоя Nautilus на ходу 22 узла обнаружил гидролокатором SQS-4 и атаковал ДЭПЛ Auriga которая пыталась атаковать конвой. Дистанция обнаружения и поддержания контакта составила порядка 3000 ярдов

Используя активный сонар атомные субмарины могли держать обнаруживать и держать контакт с дизель-электрическими ПЛ, практически без риска для себя [с учетом оружия того времени]. ВМС США прекратили строительство ДЭПЛ, все последующие ПЛ были атомные. Учитывая мнение Уилкинсона [командир Nautilus] ТТЗ по скорости были существенно увеличены (начиная с Skipjack)
